Pincha aquí para la versión en castellano On Wednesday, April 30th, we woke up in the Hacienda Los Mortiños after a full night's sleep. My first task of the day was to pick up the shoes beneath the fireplace in the hallway. There, I ran into Pablo, who was looking for his own shoes in the dining room's fireplace. The fireplaces in the hacienda are not embedded in the wall like the one I have in my house. Instead, they are metal cylinders with a glass door that completely encloses the burning firewood inside the container, and they are lifted about 30 cm off the floor. At the top, they have a tube that carries the smoke out of the house; I suppose it exits through some opening in the roof. On its way up, the tube warms the air around it. The space underneath the fireplace is where we placed our shoes to dry. There is no need to explain the smelly consequence of this action... Click here for the English version El miércoles 30 de abril amanecimos en la hacienda Los Mortiños después de dormir completo. Mi primera diligencia de ese día fue salir a buscar los zapatos en la chimenea del pasillo, donde me encontré con Pablo que buscaba los suyos en la del comedor. Las chimeneas de la hacienda no están incrustadas en la pared, como la que tengo yo en la casa, sino que son unos cilindros metálicos con una puerta de vidrio que encierra completamente la leña ardiendo dentro del recipiente, y están levantados del piso unos 30cm. En la parte superior tienen un tubo que se lleva el humo de la casa, supongo que salen a través de alguna apertura en el techo, y van calentando en su trayecto el aire alrededor. En el espacio que queda debajo de la chimenea fue donde colocamos los zapatos a secar. El pasillo olía a chigüire. Click here for the English version El martes 29 de abril, a las 8:40am, 40 minutos después de lo acordado, subimos al carro, con las botas y las medias aún mojadas del día anterior.  15 minutos más tarde, a las 8:45am Ciro nos dejó en un alto del camino, en donde comenzamos a caminar por la ribera del rio Pita en dirección a la hacienda Los Mortiños. Al montarnos los morrales al hombro descubrimos que habíamos olvidado los bastones en Santa Rita. Comenzamos a caminar a las 9:53 am y vimos por primera vez y por pocos minutos el Cotopaxi: inmenso, intimidante. Caminamos por la vereda derecha del rio Pita, primero con sol, por una media hora, de resto bajo lluvia intermitente que no cesó hasta entrada la noche. Cotopaxi visto desde Santa Rita El Pita es un rio de buen caudal, y en el tramo que hicimos da unos 3 o 4 brincos bastante altos. When I returned to the tent, it was almost impossible to fall asleep again . The rest of the night was miserable . It was partially because of the cold, and also due to my concerns and worries about deciding which equipment was best to take to the summit attack. On one hand, we have our sleeping bags that fit well in the backpacks but seem thin to protect us from the cold of the night, as I felt it was happening to me at that very moment; on the other hand, there were the 3 sleeping bags that Javier lends us, which seem warm enough but were too bulky to fit in the backpacks we brought. Additionally, it should be considered that on the day of the ascent, we will sleep in a refuge, not in a tent. Pincha aquí para la versión en castellano On Monday, April 28, at 9:00 am, we began our hike to Pasochoa Volcano, from a point located half an hour north (by car) from the Hacienda Santa Rita. The path mostly runs along a dirt road, surrounded by intense greenery, with trees framing both sides of the way, but not covering the blue of the sky, as they do in the canyon leading to the Condor Machay waterfall. The trek to Pasochoa was an enjoyable, pleasant hike, mostly easy to walk, except for the last section of the trail leading to the summit, where it becomes narrow, steep, and slippery due to the mud, largely because of the rain that fell on us just after we left the tree line. Rodrigo and Marcela reached the summit at 12:39 PM. Federica, Pablo, and I arrived at 1:10 PM. At 1:20 PM, Rodrigo confessed that he had a headache (a symptom of altitude sickness), so we began the descent. We arrived at the car 15 minutes after 4 pm. Click here for the English version El lunes 28 de abril a las 9:00 am comenzamos la caminata de ascenso a Pasochoa, en un  punto a una media hora en carro de Santa Rita. El camino transcurre mayormente por una carretera de tierra, rodeada de un verdor intenso, con árboles que enmarcan ambos lados del camino, pero que no llegan a cubrir el azul del cielo, como lo hacen en el cañón que lleva a la cascada de Condor Machay. El ascenso al Pasochoa me resultó una caminata agradable, placentera, mayoritariamente fácil de caminar, salvo al final que se vuelven pasos estrechos, y resbalosos por el barro, en buena medida a causa de la lluvia que nos cayó encima apenas dejamos atrás la línea de árboles. Rodrigo y Marcela alcanzaron la cumbre a las 12:39 pm. Federica, Pablo y yo, llegamos a la 1 y 10 pm.
