Las chaquetas para el Kilimanjaro / Kilimanjaro's Jackets
En diciembre, como parte de los regalos de navidad el niño Jesús nos trajó las chaquetas de plumas. Nos enteramos por casualidad que las consiguió en Mountain Warehouse, una cadena de tienda de excursiones de origen británico que ofrece mejores precios que Mountain Equipment Corporation (MEC) y Sail, las otras dos megatiendas de excursiones que conocemos aquí en Toronto.
La cadena británica ha llenado tanto mis expectativas como las del niño Jesús. Si las tengo que poner en orden de preferencia MEC es la primera, pero resulta cara para mi ajustado presupuesto de viaje. Sus productos son buenos y por lo general los empleados conocen bien la materia. Le sigue Mountain Warehouse, que me parece tiene buenos equipos a mejor precio y por último en mis preferencias está Sail, aunque la tienda es enorme y está llena de todo tipo de perolitos que provoca comprar. En mi experiencia, los vendedores con los que me he topado en Sail, conocen poco de los productos, y al parecer menos de las excursiones, mientras que un verdugo de MEC prácticamente nos dio consejos de que empacar y cómo hacerlo.
En cuanto a las chaquetas son el modelo Extreme de plumas, bastante ligeras. He probado la mía en varias caminatas entre -3°C y -10°C y protege bien del frio, tanto como la Columbia de dos capas que tengo desde hace 10 años pero es significativamente más ligera. Estoy satisfecho con la compra, aunque Rodrigo ya le descubrió a la suya una rasgadura en el tejido de la visera. Por lo visto la durabilidad del producto está en entredicho.
Los que no pasaron la prueba han sido los guantes de la línea Extreme de Mountain Warehouse. Durante las mismas caminatas que puse a prueba la chaqueta sentía la puntada de frío en los dedos de las manos. Por alguna razón funciona mejor una media gruesa en las que los dedos están juntos.
Last December, we started with some preparations. As part of Christmas gifts, Santa brought us new jackets feathers. We learned by chance that he got them in Mountain Warehouse, a British chain of stores specialized in outdoors which have better prices than Mountain Equipment Corporation (MEC) and Sail, the other two outdoors megastores we know here in Toronto.
The British chain has filled both mine and Santa´s expectations. If I have to sort the stores in order of preference MEC would be the first, but it is expensive for my travel budget. Their products are good and usually the employees are knowable about the matter. My second place would be for Mountain Warehouse, which I found they have good equipment at a better price, and finally Sail is at the bottom of my preference list, although the shop is huge, beautiful and filled with all kinds of stuff that you want to buy. In my experience, sellers with whom I have encountered in Sail, known little about the products, and I have the impression that some of them known less about outdoors than in the other two chains. When I asked similar question to a MEC's employee, he fully answered it and then gave us additional tips of what and how to pack other important stuff. He knew about the kind of project we were preparing for and was kind of exited for our trip.
We finally got the Extreme line of feathers' jackets. They are very light. I tried mine on several walks between -3 ° C and -10 ° C and it worked well. The jacket protected me from the cold, as well as the two-layer Columbia I have had for almost 10 years now, and it is significantly lighter. I am satisfied with the purchase, but Rodrigo has already discovered a tear in the fabric of his jacket visor. Apparently product durability is questionable.
Those who failed the completely the test were the Extreme line of Mountain Warehouse's gloves. During those walks that I tested the jacket, I felt my fingers cold and stitching. For some reason works best if I use a regular sock where I can have all fingers together warming each other.
