Bruce Trail: Map 10 - Mount Nemo

1st Stretch:

On Sunday, December 10 at 12:20 p.m., we began the first stretch of map 10, from the intersection of Britannia Road and Blind Line, in Burlington, to Calcium Pits on Twiss Road. According to the map, it is a 6.8 km section, but it could be a little longer, if you lose the trail, and walk an extra kilometer, as happened to us.

This time we were 4 plus one: Rodrigo, Federica, Eduardo, and I plus Malaika, in a single car. We parked at Britannia Road with Blind Line, at the trail's entrance, and walked all together in the same direction. Of course, to return home, we had to retrace what we had walked, which means that we did this section of the Trail in both directions.

It was a pleasant walk between an urban forest and a good stretch of rural road (this last of about two kilometers long). Throughout all the way, you can see quite luxurious properties, pretty much like those in magazines. The afternoon was mostly gray, rainless, and cold. Although the route has some slopes, it is mostly flat and easy.

As a curious note, on Derry Road, almost reaching kilometer 100 of the map, we met a Bruce Trail volunteer named Gerald, who was working on changing the entrance signal of the Trail. The volunteers had been working on cleaning a new 100-meter section along Derry Road in the past weeks, and we were there just when they were officially opening this section to the public.

2nd Stretch:

On Sunday, March 31, 2024, we walked the second section of map 10. Marcela replaced Federica in the group, joining Rodrigo, Eduardo, Malaika and me. We started again past noon, parked at the intersection of Britannia Road and Blind Line in Burlington, and from there walked southward on Blind Line to the entrance of Mount Nemo Park on the Guelph Line. Once in the park, we walked the trail to the viewpoint of Mount Nemo, had a snack, and returned to the car.

It was an easy, cool, sunny hike.

 3rd Stretch:

On Sunday, August 25, 2024, I completed the route covered in map 10, with a 7.88 km journey according to the GPS odometer (or 8.68 km as per Google Maps) between Guelph Line south of 1 Side Road and Mount Nemo. It is mostly a flat and easy-to-walk section, which runs largely on the No 1 Side Road and Walkers line. A piece of the trail that runs between Guelph Line and No 1 Side Road was temporarily closed, forcing me to walk that section on the pavement.

When Walkers Line meets No 2 Side Road, the Bruce Trail goes into the woods again, then it climbs the cliff of the escarpment, on a short stretch with a steep slope. In this steep stretch, the difficulty of the trail rises, let's say to a 4 out of 10. Once you reach the top of the escarpment, the terrain becomes a plateau through Mount Nemo. It is a walk on rocky terrain, with little inclination, ups and downs but not flat, let's say that the difficulty is then two or three out of 10, due to the risk of tripping over stones.

The most challenging part of the day was the warmth and hydration of Malaika, who on this occasion was my only companion. The streams were low, almost dried until we advanced on Walkers Line, and I had to share my water with the dog. Unlike the previous sections of the trial, we were dropped off at the starting point and picked up near the arrival point.
