Climbing Cotopaxi is (or was) a tough challenge, and the fact that the four of us achieved the summit demonstrates something: either we were well prepared and trained, or we have unbreakable determination, or we had good judgment in choosing our support team, or we are extremely lucky… or perhaps a little bit of all of the above combined and blended. The truth is that the conditions were right, and we reached the summit. What follows in these writings is the celebration of our success, the summary of those final moments, and the photos that capture the sweetness of the achievement, but that say little about the effort, the planning, and the training that enable us to reach it. Click here to see the version in English Alcanzamos una nueva cumbre y cerramos con esto un desafío que teníamos pendiente desde hace varios años, sino todos, al menos yo. Subir al Cotopaxi es (o fue) un reto duro y el hecho que los cuatro lo hallamos logrado demuestra algo: bien sea que estábamos bien preparados y entrenados, o que tenemos una determinación inquebrantable, o que tuvimos buen tino en la escogencia del equipo de apoyo, o que somos sumamente sortarios… o quizás un poco de todo lo anterior combinado y revuelto. Versión en castellano At 8 am, we took our time to have breakfast slowly, then returned to the room to finish packing our bags, leave the room empty and the bags with Alfredo. We continued killing time until noon, when we went to the restaurant to have lunch. On the menu: sambo soup to start, chops, chicken, or trout as the second course, and dessert. Mauricio (‘el muñeco’), who is the second guide for the excursion, joined us for lunch. Ecuador requires a certified guide for every two tourists climbing Cotopaxi. Team B in the summit At 2 pm we left the Tambopaxi and headed to the parking lot of the volcano. We started walking to the refuge at 3 pm via the zigzag route (there are at least two routes to the refuge). By 4 pm, we were already there. Click here for the version in English El viernes 2 de mayo desayunamos a las 8 y nos tomamos la mañana con calma. Entre las 10 y las 11 dejamos los bultos con Alfredo y seguimos matando el tiempo hasta las 12 pm que fuimos a almorzar en el restaurante del Tambopaxi. De menú: sopa de sambo para comenzar, chuletas, pollo o trucha, como segundo plato, y el postre. En el almuerzo se nos unió Mauricio (el muñeco) que es el segundo guía de la excursión. Ecuador exige un guía certificado por cada dos excursionistas. Equipo A en la cumbre A las 2pm dejamos el Tambopaxi y nos dirigimos al parqueadero en la Toyota. Comenzamos el ascenso a pie hacia el refugio a las 3pm por la ruta de zigzag. A las 4pm ya estábamos allí. Encontramos mucha gente pululando en los alrededores, más que el día anterior. Click here for the English version Desayunamos a las 8 de la mañana, por primera vez en Ecuador, los cuatro solos. Después volvimos a la habitación y nos dedicamos a revisar la ropa y los equipos que usaríamos el día de la cumbre. Los guías que nos acompañarían en esta nueva etapa no habían llegado. El primero de ellos, Romel, llegó a las 9:15am en el mismo Toyota blanco que habían usado Pablo y Ciro para transportarnos de un sitio a otro. Sin duda un uso eficiente y coordinado del mismo recurso. Romel instaló en una mesa del jardín los equipos técnicos que necesitábamos llevar: arneses, cascos, crampones, piolets, botas y mascarillas para filtrar los gases del volcán. Repartimos los equipos, los cargamos en los morrales y nos fuimos en la Toyota al parqueadero del Cotopaxi. De allí subimos caminando al refugio Jose Rivas, en medio de una granizada.
